Three state parks within an hour of Houston point in three different directions, and each one is a different kind of day. San Jacinto Battleground, east in La Porte, is where Texas won its independence in an 18-minute battle in 1836, under a 567-foot monument. Brazos Bend, southwest past Missouri City, is 37 miles of trails around lakes full of birds and alligators. Galveston Island, southeast on the Gulf, has a beach side and a bay side. This is the outdoor half of the day. The eating half is at the end: one table on the way back from each park.
We run State Park Near Me, a directory of every state park in the country, and we are a guest here. Top of Houston asked for the parks. They supplied the restaurants.
The day, in order
Pick one park per day; they are too far apart to stack. Brazos Bend and Galveston Island both say they often fill to capacity, so reserve a day pass online before you drive. Children 12 and under get in free at both. You do not need a fishing licence to fish from the shore or a pier in a Texas state park. San Jacinto is the short trip, about 17 miles east, and its grounds are free; the monument and museum close Monday and Tuesday.
San Jacinto Battleground

On April 21, 1836, Sam Houston’s army of settlers, Tejanos and volunteers beat Santa Anna’s forces here in about 18 minutes and won Texas its independence. Today the site covers 1,200 acres in La Porte, with a self-guided driving tour of the battlefield, trails, birdwatching and fishing. The grounds are free and open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The San Jacinto Monument and Museum are open Wednesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; the monument costs $14 for adults, $10 for seniors and veterans and $6 for children 11 and younger. On Saturday, October 24, the Fall Fandango runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on the first Saturday of each month the site opens at 7 a.m. for birders.
Brazos Bend

The park calls itself a nature lover’s paradise, and the trails prove it: 37 miles of them for walking, biking and horses, circling lakes and running into hardwood forest. The paved half-mile Creekfield Lake Nature Trail has an accessible boardwalk. Alligators are common, so keep to the trails and keep dogs on a six-foot leash and out of the lakes. Entry is $7 per person 13 and older, and the park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. A burn ban has been in force since August 28, so no wood fires. The park closes completely November 17 to 19 and December 15 to 17. On Saturday nights the George Observatory, run by the Houston Museum of Natural Science, opens inside the park; its tickets are sold online only, and you still need a park day pass.
Galveston Island

One park, two coasts: the beach side on the Gulf and the bay side behind it. You can swim, fish from shore without a licence, paddle the park’s marked trails, and walk four miles of trails and boardwalks over the dunes and marshes. Entry is $5 per adult, children 12 and under free, and the park is open daily. Some boardwalks are closed after flood damage, so follow the closure signs. Horseback riding on the beach is allowed only from November through February. The nature center is open weekends from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The park’s busy season runs March through October, but it says it often reaches capacity, so reserve a pass.
