Why this site exists

The same handful of marquee rooms with publicists get covered to exhaustion, while the neighborhood spots locals drive across town for on a Tuesday night stay buried under sponsored listings on the platforms most people search.

Most national coverage of Houston stops at the James Beard winners and the Galleria steakhouses. That misses the point of eating here. The city's real depth lives in a Bellaire Boulevard strip center at 10 p.m., in a Pearland BBQ pit, in the Viet-Cajun boil joints that invented a cuisine that exists nowhere else. Houston is the most ethnically diverse large metro in the country, and its food map reflects that, if you know where to look. We built this guide because that map deserved to be drawn honestly.

Two rules we don't break

01
Local consensus, not marketing noise.

Every ranking runs through our Insider Score: Bayesian-weighted ratings, so a 4.9 from 50 reviews doesn't outrank a 4.6 from 2,000, plus a momentum bonus for restaurants with sustained local volume. The list reflects what regulars would tell you, not what is trending with weekend visitors.

02
The city changes, the list does too.

New rooms open across the metro, neighborhood spots earn into the consensus, longtime favorites slip when the kitchen changes. Rankings rebuild weekly, so the list keeps up with the city instead of freezing in place.

№ 03 · Coverage

What we cover

We cover 1,831 published restaurants across Greater Houston: the city proper and the suburbs, Katy, Cypress, Sugar Land, Pearland, Spring, and the rest of the Fort Bend and Harris County ring. That means regional Mexican and Tex-Mex, Vietnamese pho and Viet-Cajun crawfish, Gulf Coast seafood, Texas BBQ, dim sum, South Asian halal, soul food, ramen, and the chef-driven New American rooms Inside the Loop. No corridor gets privileged over another. A strip-center gem in Alief earns the same serious treatment as a tasting menu in Montrose. We track 142+ restaurants across the metro against the same methodology; the full method is laid out at How We Work.

Top of Houston is published by Top Rated Network LLC, an independent, veteran-owned Las Vegas media company that runs city dining guides on the same methodology across the country. The rankings and the writing are produced by this site’s own desk.

The site is small by design. No investors, no growth pressure, no quarterly board meeting that needs engagement numbers to keep climbing. The rankings answer to the data; the data answers to the city.

The methodology (Bayesian-weighted ratings, weekly recalculation) is the same one Top Rated Network uses across its other city guides. The editorial voice is local to Houston. The sites themselves are built and maintained by WebIgniter, our in-house web studio.
